Why do I lag people?

I use a linksys...and its like 6 years old o_o

But I connect with most people fine, even behind a firewall/antivirus.

Try turning those off Tom if you have them on.

some background programs also drain bandwidth which automatically turns on when you turn on the pc

linksys routers have always been good for me.
from my experience netgear is terrible....and their customer service is worse. Me and many others have that to say when someone asks if we'd ever buy another netgear product.
otherwise you probably dont have open ports, and if you do, then you dont have a static IP on your computer, aaand if you still do, then something must be wrong in between those (sometimes your router will say ports are open, but it straight up lies...like mine)

to fix that problem, you can always connect directly into the modem instead of your router, or atleast connect to it briefly and play with people you normally lag with and see if you still lag after a couple games. if not then atleast you know its your router, and if thats the case then it has to do with ports for sure.

Belkin is also a terrible router company for gaming. You have them 100% guaranteed you're on a closed NAT meaning you can't play with anyone except those with a closed NAT.

not quite, i've been using a belkin and its better than the netgear i have.
although occasionally it randomly changes to strict, but most of the time its an open NAT

the netgear one, even if i open the damn ports, it doesnt change a thing
